A flame retardant composition comprises a thermoplastic carrier, an intumescent accelerant, a rheology modifier, and a halogen-free flame retardant. The halogen-free flame retardant may be a phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) type intumescent flame retardant comprising a polyphosphate foaming agent, an oxidizing agent, and a carbon donor. The flame retardant composition may be suitable for being processed by extrusion, cooling, and pelletizing to form flame retardant pellets. A thermoplastic article comprising the flame-retardant composition may exhibit flame retardant properties.
